Handover Ceremony of AEON’s Conservation Initiative with WWF
Malaysia and SFD in Bukit Piton (23rd April 2018 )
The initiative was started in 2011 with the objective to restore forestation on 77 hectares of land in Bukit Piton, Class 1 Forest Reserve (Block 111-10 and 111-18) due to extensive logging, unsustainable practices and forest fires (1980 ~ 2007) that led to the declining ecosystem and resulted in the sharp decrease of the orangutan population in Ulu Segama district. AEON has since invested RM 500,000 and planted more than 12,000 trees with the help of school children, the Malaysian Armed Forces and AEON volunteers for the conservation of Bukit Piton as part of the company’s basic principles of “Pursuing Peace, Respecting Humanity and Contributing to Local Communities, Centred on Customers” in helping local wildlife and communities.
Today, luscious greenery has been restored in the area and more orangutans have been spotted within the reserve. The handover ceremony was attended by Dato’ Sam Mannan, Chief Conservator of Forests of Sabah Forestry Department; Dato’ Dr Dionysius Shankar Kumar Sharma, Chief Executive Officer of WWF-Malaysia; Poh Ying Loo, Executive Director of AEON CO. (M) BHD.; various officials from the Sabah Forestry Department and AEON representatives.
